Tyre (Tire) Inflation with Nitrogen (N2)

Tyres(tire) usually inflated with compressed air and most of us doing it while fueling our vehicle at the fuel station. Recently, I went to a workshop for wheel alignment and to change new tyres for my vehicle. The workshop owner claimed that by inflating the tyres with nitrogen gas, we will have a more comfy ride and less need for tyers inflation. He also claimed it I can save a bit more on the fuel consumption.

See here what I've found on the net:

Theory 1: nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules so they won't permeate through the rubber of the tyre like oxygen will, and thus you'll never lose pressure over time due to leakage. The fact is any gas will leak out of a tyre if its at a higher pressure than the ambient pressure outside. The only way to stop it is a non-gas-permeable membrane lining the inside of the tyre.

The science bit: Water is about half the size of either nitrogen or oxygen, so it might diffuse out of the tyre faster, but it would have to be much, much faster to make a difference. Tyres can leak 1-2 psi a month at the extreme end of the scale although it's not clear how much of that is by permeation through the rubber, and how much is through microscopic leaks of various sorts. For a racing tyre to lose significant water during its racing lifetime (maybe an hour or so for Formula 1), the permeation rate would have to be hundreds of times faster than oxygen or nitrogen, so that pretty much cancels out the idea that it's the molecule size that makes the difference.

Theory 2: Nitrogen means less water vapour. This is more to do with the thermal properties than anything else. Nitrogen is an inert gas; it doesn't combust or oxidise. The process used to compress nitrogen eliminates water vapor and that's the key to this particular theory. When a tyre heats up under normal use, any water vapour inside it also heats up which causes an increase in tyre pressure. By removing water vapor with a pure nitrogen fill, you're basically going to allow the tyre to stay at a more constant pressure irrespective of temperature over the life of the tyre. In other words, your tyre pressures won't change as you drive.

The science bit: The van der Waals gas equation provides a good estimate for comparing the expansions of oxygen and nitrogen to water. If you compare moist air (20°C, 80% RH) to nitrogen, you'll find that going up as far as 80°C results in the moist air increasing in pressure by about 0.01 psi less per litre volume than nitrogen. Moist air will increase in pressure by 7.253psi whereas nitrogen will increase in pressure by 7.263psi. Even humid air has only a small amount of water in it (about 2 mole % which means about 2% by volume), so that all puts a bit of a blunt tip on the theory that it's the differences in thermal expansion rates that give nitrogen an advantage. In fact it would seem to suggest that damp air is marginally better than nitrogen.

Nitrogen inflation is nothing new - the aerospace world has been doing it for years in aircraft tyres. Racing teams will also often use nitrogen inflation, but largely out of convenience rather than due to any specific performance benefit, which would tend to fit with the armchair science outlined above. Nitrogen is supplied in pressurised tanks, so no other equipment is needed to inflate the tyres - no compressors or generators or anything.

Filling your tyres with nitrogen mainly does two things: it eliminates moisture, and it replaces skinny oxygen molecules with fat nitrogen molecules, reducing the rate at which compressed gas diffuses through porous tyre walls. That means, theoretically at least, that a tire filled with nitrogen retains optimal pressure longer, leading to more uniform tyre wear and save the fuel consumption. The commonly quoted figure is that tyres inflated to 32 psi get 3.3 percent better mileage than at 24 psi.

Some benefit on using Nitrogen gas for a conclusion:
-N2 is an inlet gas and dry, hence no moisture and minimize tyres & rim oxidation.
-N2 insensitive to temperature and remain stable pressure/not expanding when hot.
-N2 has bigger molecular size than O2, therefore air 'leaking' through tyre wall is much slower, good for those who not checking air pressure regularly.
-Tire runs cooler because N2 retains less heat

Overall, filling up with nitrogen won't hurt and may provide some minimal benefit

Optivin

Now it is almost 3 years I have been taking this supplement. I came to know this product from my sister in law's neighbor who leaves in Penang. She asked my wife to find the place where she can get this supplement cheaper. Through the address on the bottle pack we tried to search for the place and finally we found it near Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur. It’s quite expensive because it is a Multi Level Marketing product, so I have to become a member of Natstar so that I can get it at a cheaper price.

What is OPTIVIN™?

OPTIVIN™ is a proprietary blend of multiple berry extracts rich in anthocyanins derived from wild blueberry, strawberry, cranberry, wild bilberry, elderberry and raspberry. OPTIVIN™ is developed very recently to provide you with an optimal intake of antioxidant nutrients. OPTIVIN™ is the most potent first line of defense you can have to neutralize and eliminate the harmful effects of free radicals.

Why are colours important to our health?

The reason lies in the very substances that give fruits and vegetables their colors: phytochemicals. Anthocyanins have been found to possess some of the strongest physiological effects of any phytochemicals found in the colours of nature. From cancer to aging, heart disease to diabetes, anthocyanin's usefulness in protecting many body systems is becoming well established in the scientific world.

The science behind colours.

Many of the pigments responsible for the color of fruits and vegetables are the best sources of antioxidants. That's why health experts are recommending us to consume at least 5 servings of 5 different coloured fruits and vegetables every day in order to stay healthy.

A wealth of scientific evidence has determined that the body's formation of unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals is the cause of over 60 degenerative diseases. When you have too few antioxidants to counteract your free radicals, significant damage can occur, leading to a variety of diseases, ranging from stroke and fibromyalgia, to sinusitis, arthritis, vision problems, and even Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.

A poor diet, cigarette smoking, environmental pollutants, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun also increase the free-radical load, creating a situation known as "oxidative stress." The same process that causes iron to rust and cut apples to turn brown is happening in every cell in our body.
It is estimated that each of the 60 trillion cells in the human body take 10,000 oxidative "hits" every day! One cigarette is said to unleash 3 trillion free radicals into the blood stream. Luckily, our body does have a defense system against these rogue "oxidant" compounds: antioxidants. Found in numerous fruits and vegetables, antioxidants literally "mop up" free radicals.
However, free radicals are generated at such a pace due to our modern lifesyles that food alone can't provide all the antioxidant ammunition our body needs. Most people do not consume the recommended 5 or more servings of 5-colour fruits and vegetables everyday to receive our antioxidant requirements.
Antioxidants such as A, C and E help neutralize free radicals but their contribution is minimal. A molecule of vitamin C or E can only deactivate one free radical at a time. When vitamin E donates hydrogen to neutralise free radicals, it turns into vitamin E radical and becomes ineffective.

Is there another alternative?
Anthocyanins are natural substances that provide pigmentation (colour) to fruits and vegetables, in particular berries, and serve as a powerful natural antioxidant. Sunlight is necessary for photosynthesis but it creates free radicals that can damage the plant. These pigments act as antioxidants for their own natural defense to prevent the plants from damage.

Similarly, anthocyanins act to promote health and prevent chronic disease by scavenging free radicals to prevent them from harming the normal components of the cell in the human body. Several studies have shown that berries, which are rich in anthocyanins, possess potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-carcinogenic and anti-diabetic properties. Researchers at the United States Dept. of Agriculture, Human Nutrition Center have found that blueberries rank #1 in antioxidant activity when compared to a list of 40 other fresh fruits and vegetables.

How is OPTIVIN™ different?

More than 20 combinations of berry extracts were formulated and evaluated to determine the safest and most efficacious combination. By combining some of the most well researched berries into a highly potent formulation, Optivin™ provides a broader spectrum of antioxidants than any other individual berry extract. The different chemical profiles contained in OPTIVIN™ makes it a potent free radical quencher.

Advertising Banner Rotator Script

The internet is really a huge resources of information and knowledge and definitely can't be denied. During my studying time, computer and internet are still at their early stage. I still remember in 80's while I was studying at the Seoul National University, Korea in engineering, only a few computer languages were available.

The computer language has tremendously developed and it includes codes and scripts. To develop softwares for computer and the internet it needs knowledge regarding computer languages, codes, scripts and so on, but for now we leave it to the experts.

There is an immeasurable amount of resources that we could obtain from and also information and knowledge that we could spread through (and advertisements are part of it). Many site provides web tools and scripts that can be use or implemented on our sites. We may make use some of these resources from the Internet which could benefited us.

For example this banner rotator scripts. For instance, when we have many ads to be published but we have only limited space or probably we don't want our site to be so crowded with ads, we may use this banner rotator script to do the trick.

Get the script from
Choicewebtools or copy the scripts below and paste it on to your blog template with some modification that suit your need. For beginners like me, this is the way to learn and to improvise my website using their scripts and web tools.

Offset Printing (The Prepress)

Printing is still a very important industry, even though electronic media has taken some of it’s role in spreading knowledge through Internet and e-documents in today modern world. Printing items such as books, brochures, fliers, calendars and much more, however are still needed in their old fashion way. When we talk about off-set printing most people will think that it only involves the process of transferring images from printing plates to paper (press) using the printing machine, however, the actual printing processes that we have to consider start from receiving manuscript or draft making until the final finish products. It can be divided into three parts, that are, prepress, press and post press. In this article as an introduction, I will try to elaborate the first part of the printing processes.

The Prepress

Prepress processes include the work of draft layout, typesetting, graphic designing, proofreading, copy editing, page assembly, color separating, film producing and plate making. In modern printing technology this process is also known as Desktop Publishing (DTP). Typesetter or graphic designers who are responsible in carrying out this job usually have good skills, knowledge and talent in manipulating some of the commercial graphic or image editing software for instance Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign (of the Adobe Creative Suite), Adobe Pagemaker, QuarkXPress, CorelDraw, Microsoft Publisher or the free open source software such as Inkscape, (with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand and CorelDraw) and Scribus, program that brings professional page layout to Linux/Unix, MacOS X, and Windows desktops with a combination of press-ready output and new approaches to page layout and also supports professional publishing features, such as CMYK color, separations, ICC color management and versatile PDF creation.

Nowadays, the images created in the Desktop Publishing (DTP) application can be output directly to printing plates and are called Computer To Plate (CTP) output - such as Suprasetter thermal CTP system from Heidelberg, Elantrix H CTP system from Agfa etc. Whereas in older technology, images are firstly produced to films - Computer To Film (CTF) using the imagesetter, and then it will be contacted and exposed to plates in an exposing machine. The resolution on a typical image setter is 1270 or 2540 dpi with a maximum dpi of 4000.

In a single color printing items such as a text book content, only one plate will be produced using one of the above plate making process, where as in full color items such as colorful brochures, color images will be separated into 4 colors that are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black and abbreviated as CMYK to produce 4 printing plates. Even in some printing items, additional plates (for spot colors – such as gold, silver or customized colors) are needed.

Plate making processes have a very important role in determining the quality of the item to be produced. The machine has to be professionally calibrated, because a slightest different in images screen or density of one of the plates, may result in bad printing outputs.

The good produced plates will be used in the second part of the printing processes, that is the Press.

Global Warming, Desalination and Marine Life

"A world without fresh water would be a world bereft of humans, and yet one in five people lacks regular access to this most basic of life-sustaining substances. By 2025, fully a third of the planet's growing population could find itself scavenging for safe drinking water".

"One third of the planet will be desert by the year 2100" say climate experts in the most direct warning yet of the effects of global warming".

"More and more countries facing extreme drought conditions are looking towards desalination as a last hope for a source of freshwater".

"Untreated sewage is a big problem that leads to the loss of coral reefs but global warming has created difficult conditions for marine fauna and flora, the rising sea levels and the effects of seaward development" say conservationist.

From these statements from four different experts we some how have to admit that they are referring to the problems that the world are facing now.

Two things are clear about fresh water in the future: There will be less of it and we will pay more for what much of the world now takes for granted. The Global Environment Facility, an environmental fund, has said that water crisis is now a global concern with water scarcity the dominating issue of discussion amongst relevant institutions throughout the world.

Is the Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination contribute to global warming?

A major advantage of desalination of sea water is that water is always available even in the most severe droughts. Extracting salt from seawater to make it drinkable is the wrong way to handle water shortages around the world and could exacerbate climate change, a leading conservation group said however independent scientists disputed the findings and said desalination plays a minor role in global warming.

Some country like North Africa and the Middle East which is the world's most water-scarce region, has to turn to seawater as the source of fresh water through desalination process. Desalination has become a growing trend particularly in Australia, the Middle East, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, India and China.

Saudi Arabia, the world's largest producer of desalinated water with 27 desalination plants provide drinking water to major urban and industrial centers through a network of water pipes running for more than 2,300 miles. Desalination meets 70% of the Kingdom's drinking water requirement and several new desalination plants are under construction by the French utility services group Veolia, worth 702 million Euros and expected to be completed by 2010. Once completed, the Kingdom's network of desalination plants will have a capacity of 800 million gallons a day however there are power plants which produce energy and do desalination at the same time.

China, which is severely hit by water shortages, will turn to the ocean as it has announced recently it would utilize directly around 50 billion cubic meters of sea water each year by 2010 and plans to use desalination to produce 800 million to one billion liters of fresh water per day to cover about 20 percent of the demand gap in coastal areas.

The Ashkelon seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant in Israel– the largest in the world – with a capacity of 320,000 cubic meters per day, produces around 13% of the country's domestic consumer demand – equivalent to 5–6% of Israel's total water needs.

South East Asia country like Singapore which already have a long term raw water agreement with their neighbor country Malaysia, also have a SWRO desalination plant in Tuas – one of the world's largest desalination plants and is paying Dutch experts tens of millions to devise ways to protect their island – ranks among the most energy efficient ever constructed, enabling it to achieve the lowest desalinated seawater price in the world.

Global warming and desalination pose a threat to marine fauna and flora?

The rising of marine temperatures (which most scientists blamed on the emission of greenhouse gases), influence all kinds of ocean conditions, including sea levels, marine ecosystems and the circulation of the deep ocean between the poles and the tropics.

The species affected range from plankton, which forms the basis of marine food chains, through to polar bears, walruses, seals, sea lions, penguins, various seabird species and coral reefs. Global warming could be the knock-out punch for many species which are already under stress from over-fishing and habitat loss. Even the coldest, darkest depths of the world's oceans can't escape the harmful effects of global warming - and that includes deep-sea corals and 'living fossil' fish. They've outlived the dinosaurs and a whole lot more, but global warming may yet kill off the coelacanth. Scientists fear the coelacanth - a "living fossil" fish that has been swimming the seas for an astonishing 400 million years - will be threatened if changes in ocean temperatures leading to the destruction of life - nurturing coral reef systems.

Coral reefs are delicate, yet they are one of the most important ecosystems in the marine world. They are home to thousands of marine species including clams, lobsters and other marine life and are a biological source for drugs. They have the highest primary productivity of any coastal ecosystems and are the breeding ground for over 3,000 species of marine life.

How desalination effected marine life?

1-As the seawater is taken in during SWRO desalination process, small life forms such as plankton, eggs and fish larvae are also removed.

2-The brine — the highly concentrated saline water — discharged from the plants is mostly sent back into the sea where it increases the salinity of the water, posing a threat to sea life and disrupting the ecosystem.

How to minimize the environmental impact?

Discharge the brine far enough from the coast so that it can dilute or finding alternative uses for the saline discharge in other industrial processes might minimize the environmental impact especially to marine life.

Free Radicals

Several years ago while waiting for my lunch being served at the Sushi King near Bukit Bintang Kuala Lumpur, I was approached by a young Malaysian Indian asking me whether I know about a so called free radicals. So as not wanted to be disturbed assuming that he is a salesman trying to sell products, I said that I have heard about it even though I had not the slightest clue as to what it meant.

Now, after recalled it, I realized how stupid I was for not giving him a chance to explain about it. If you are concern about you health, you should know this too.

What is free radical?

Free radical is any atom or molecule that is highly reactive and unstable because they contain unpaired electron in their molecular structures. In order to become stable, they attack and steal electrons from other molecules. This attack spontaneously generates another unstable free radical molecule, starting a chain reaction that damages cellular function, eventually leading to the cells' death.

Scientists call free radicals the underlying cause of many chronic diseases. Dr. Bruce Ames, Ph.D., a well-known scientist in the field of antioxidants, estimates that just one cell in the human body is hit about 10,000 times a day by a free radical. If that’s multiplied by the trillions of cells in our body the magnitude of this activity is tremendous.

Do you know how they destroy your health?

Free radicals kill cells, damage body tissues, destroy enzymes, attack DNA and produce toxic chemicals.

A wealth of scientific evidence has determined that the body's formation of unstable oxygen molecules (free radicals) is the cause of various diseases such as heart diseases, strokes, diabetes, arthritis (joint pain), sinusitis, vision problems (cataracts), neurological impairments, high blood pressure and cancers.

How are free radicals formed?

They may formed through one of these:
1- Unhealthy food - fatty diet made up of processed food, fried food, barbecued and charbroiled food.
2-Alcoholic beverages.
3-Cigarette.
4-Stress - all chemicals and some endocrine hormones create free radicals.
5-Toxic chemicals in pesticides and insecticides.
6-Ultraviolet (UV) rays.
7-Environmental pollutants and contaminants.

How to prevent or minimize the damage done by free radicals

Antioxidants were found to be the best solution in solving free radicals problem. Antioxidants are compounds that help to inhibit the many oxidation reactions caused by free radicals thereby preventing or delaying damage to the cells and tissues. They neutralize free radical by donating their own electron and don't turn into free radicals because they are stable in either form, ending the electron-stealing reaction.

It is well known that fruit and vegetables (Vitamin C and E) are good sources of antioxidants. Anthocyanins (natural substances that provide pigmentation-[color] to fruits and vegetables) serve as a powerful natural antioxidants. That is why health experts recommend strongly for us to consume at least 5-9 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables a day to replenish our body's antioxidant supply.

Here is the rank of antioxidants by potency
2-Grape Seed Extract, Pine Bark Extract
5-Vitamin E, Beta-Carotene
6-Vitamin C

As well as eating more fruit and vegetables, antioxidant intake can be topped up by drinking more tea (which also has been found as a natural resources of antioxidants), helping to promote overall health and well-being.
